Many years ago, notable American political journalist, author, professor, and world peace advocate Norman Cousins wrote his book “Anatomy of an Illness” in which he described how he had overcome ankylosing spondylitis*, a crippling illness, with the use of laughter.
Norman states that he was suffering tremendously with debilitating pain which left him bedridden. The doctors informed him that his chances of recovery were one in 500. He decided that he should take help of alternative medicine and that is when he stumbled upon the many benefits of laughter. He made the joyous discovery. He realized that 10 minutes of genuine belly laughter had an anesthetic effect and would give him at least 2 hours of pain-free sleep.
His recovery opened the doors for further medical research on how laughter affected us in areas of psychology, physiology and psychoneuroimmunology.
The benefits of laughter are wide and varied. Constant research is being conducted to support the findings. However, to reap the benefits of laughter as medicine the following points should be noted.
- Laugh so that your whole body, whole being becomes involved and not superficially.
- Laughter should be a belly laughter and not of mannerism or politeness or of duty.
