If you had a rollicking laughter recently, keep it up, because in our following blogs we will tell you how exactly laughter can not only improve your health, but also keep those nasty lifestyle diseases at bay.
‘Laughter Wellness’ is a new branch of lifestyle medicine that uses the energy of laughter to promote health and well-being in body, mind and spirit.
Laughter has both medicinal and meditational powers. When we indulge in laughter on a daily basis, the energy from laughter changes our very chemistry, our brain waves and our intelligence.
Laugh for optimal health
Today, even medical science says that laughter is one of the most deep-going medicine, which nature has freely provided man with. It is said that it is possible that you can even ward of illness and cure them with laughter. On the other hand, if a person cannot laugh, even if he is healthy, eventually he will lose his health. Laughter certainly brings positive energy from inner sources to the surface.
Many years ago, notable American political journalist, author, professor, and world peace advocate Norman Cousins wrote his book “Anatomy of an Illness” in which he described how he had overcome ankylosing spondylitis*, a crippling illness, with the use of laughter.
Norman states that he was suffering tremendously with debilitating pain which left him bedridden. The doctors informed him that his chances of recovery were one in 500. He decided that he should take help of alternative medicine and that is when he stumbled upon the many benefits of laughter. He made the joyous discovery. He realized that 10 minutes of genuine belly laughter had an anesthetic effect and would give him at least 2 hours of pain-free sleep.
His recovery opened the doors for further medical research on how laughter affected us in areas of psychology, physiology and psychoneuroimmunology.
The benefits of laughter are wide and varied. Constant research is being conducted to support the findings. However, to reap the benefits of laughter as medicine the following points should be noted.
- Laugh so that your whole body, whole being becomes involved and not superficially.
- Laughter should be a belly laughter and not of mannerism or politeness or of duty.
- Laughter requires presence of mind, quickness of seeing into things and intelligence
- Laughter should be authentic to be healthy
- Laughter comes from your inner spirit
